Giving Back

Newfoundland Rescue finds loving homes for unwatend purebred Newfoundlands.

Newfoundlands in Rescue are acquired from animal shelters or surrendered by owners who can no longer keep them. If you are considering turning over your Newfounland due to financial hardship, change of jobs, divorce, or any other reason please contact a member of the Newfoundland Rescue.

If you can no longer provide a healthy environment for your working dog,  I urge you to contact the Newfoundland Rescue. Do not open your gate and let them run. Do not dump them off at the County Animal Shelter. The Newfoundland Rescue will provide a loving foster home until a permanent home is lcoated for our Newfoundlands.

MEET TESS

Ebay's Newport Tess, CGC, DD.  Yes, she really was up for auction on Ebay.  Thanks to astute web-watchers her owners were encouraged to turn her over to rescue instead of auction to the highest bidder.  She was nearly 6 years old when she came to us 4.5 years ago.  We were certain we could successfully foster her because we already had 4 Newfs (1 over our city's legal limit) so we wouldn't be tempted to keep her.   Hah!  Two things happened:  she put her head on my shoulder and told me she'd be a great pet therapy dog, and the people I'd been talking to about adopting her proclaimed that she was "too old".  That was it, after years of boys we finally had a girl in the house again.   In short order Tess taught all the boys she ruled the roost.

In her former life Tess lived outdoors only in a small concrete patio.  Her owners travelled frequently so she was boarded often, luckily at a good facility that cared for her and worked on her training while she was in residence.  I took full advantage of her previous training and in short order she earned the Canine Good Citizen and Orange County SPCA pet therapy titles.   Her obedience was a huge plus when, in spite of her small size and slightly advanced age, she earned the Draft Dog title I had been pursuing for years.  With us, in her third home she finally found the right fit.  I am very proud of this sweet girl, small but mighty.

Meet LEO

Leo was owner turned in to rescue 3.5 years ago because this back yard dog needed expensive knee surgery and intensive physical therapy for complete recovery.  Further evaluation revealed he needed surgery on both knees ASAP!  He was 4 years old and the drooliest Newf we'd ever met, but very sweet and very cute.  No one wanted to adopt a dog with 2 re-manufactured knees so he became the latest Shapiro boy.  He was our 5th adoption through Newf Rescue.  For his 7th birthday gift (to me), he passed theAKC Canine Good Citizen test and became a therapy dog through the Orange County SPCA's PAWS program!  I feel Therapy Dog is the highest calling any Newf can aspire to, and luckily it comes naturally to most of them.   Leo and I take plenty of drool towels along on our visits to an assisted living facility where he awes the residents.  We look forward to beginning work at the County childrens' temporary shelter.  Leo is a treasured and beloved member of our family.
